Anorexia Nervosa is the least common of all eating disorders, occurring in approximately 1% of the population. It is a potentially life-threatening eating disorder which is characterized by self-starvation, excessive weight loss, and negative body image.  Some people with anorexia lose weight by dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced vomiting, or misusing laxatives or diet pills. Anorexia has the highest fatality rate among all mental health disorders.

Signs and symptoms of Anorexia:

  • Dramatic weight loss
  • Intense fear of weight gain
  • Dieting, restricting or otherwise limiting food intake
  • Distorted body image
  • Excessive exercise
  • Denial of hunger


Health Consequences of Anorexia:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Amenorrhea, loss of menstrual cycle
  • Irregular heart rhythms; heart failure
  • Dehydration, resulting in kidney damage
  • insomnia
  • Dry hair and skin; hair loss
  • Constantly feeling cold
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Low self-esteem
