Binge Eating Disorder is the most common eating disorder and is estimated to occur in as many as 5% of all individuals. Binge eating involves eating a large amount of food, in a short amount of time, without the compensatory behaviors as seen in bulimia. Binge eating is often done in secret and causes intense feelings of guilt, shame and depression. Binge eating is often, but not always associated with overweight or obesity.

Signs and symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder:

  • Inability to stop or control eating
  • Eating large amounts of food when not physically hungry
  • Eating to the point of physical discomfort or pain
  • Feelings of guilt, disgust and depression after eating

Health Consequences of Binge Eating Disorder:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Insomnia or sleep apnea
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Obesity (in some)
